Hatch Coaming Installation, Bedding & Corrosion Protection

Proper coaming installation is paramount to ensuring your Freeman hatch maintains watertight integrity and structural strength throughout the vessel's operational lifecycle. When installing bolt-in coamings into aluminum, fiberglass, steel, or timber decks, dissimilar metals converge in an aggressive maritime environment. Here you will find Sikaflex 591 marine hybrid adhesive sealant for durable elastic deck bedding, alongside CRC Ceramic Paste – the advanced metal-free assembly paste engineered to stop thread galling and provide galvanic isolation.

Standard installation procedure for bolt-in coamings:

1. Dry Fit & Degrease

Dry fit the coaming to the deck cutout. Degrease the coaming flange and deck mating surfaces thoroughly using heavy-duty wipes to ensure optimal sealant adhesion.

2. Bedding Compound

Apply a continuous bead of Sikaflex 591 around the flange and encirculate every bolt hole. Advanced STP polymer technology provides UV endurance and dampens hull flex.

3. Galvanic Isolation

Coat all stainless fastener threads and washer faces with CRC Ceramic Paste. Prevents galling under torque and establishes an impenetrable barrier against electrolytic corrosion.

Critical marine engineering rule: Never apply copper paste or zinc-based anti-seize between stainless steel fasteners and marine aluminum coamings. Metal-bearing pastes increase the galvanic potential differential in saltwater, accelerating pitting corrosion. Use only 100% metal-free ceramic assembly paste.
