1. T-Handle Wrenches and Portable Actuation Tools

For closures installed without a permanent flush folding handle — or on commercial working decks where preventing unauthorized access is prioritized — dogging is operated via a portable deck key:

• Freeman Classic T-Wrench (Part no. 0021-2008): Universal marine deck tool featuring an ergonomic cast aluminum T-grip and hardened drive spindle. The tool inserts directly into the center drive socket to dog or unlock the hatch in less than a quarter-turn. Commonly lost overboard during mooring maneuvers.
• Bi-Square Winch Handle (Part no. 0435-2012): Alternative operating tool engineered with a standard 8-point Bi-Square pattern for engineers and deck officers who prefer a ratcheting or winch handle format.

2. Center Bushing Overhaul Kits – Pre-2011 vs. Post-2011 Architecture

The center spindle bushing assembly forms the primary dynamic barrier between the topside deck handle and the internal cam hub. Over several decades of production, Freeman has refined the bushing design:

• Modern Hatches Built Post-2011 (Part no. 0031-2204): Freeman’s current universal overhaul kit without a separate outer sleeve. Seats directly into the precision-machined cover hub, supplied complete with dual O-rings, thrust washers, and stainless roll pin. Fits all round, oval, and rectangular hatches 15 inches and larger.
• Legacy Hatches Built Pre-2011 (Part no. 0031-2201): Earlier generation configuration incorporating a separate press-fit stainless steel sleeve. Required for overhauling older covers where the aluminum bore has suffered galvanic pitting or excessive wear.
• Compact Models 8 & 12 (Part no. 0031-2214): Models 8 and 12 utilize a more compact spindle diameter and require their own dedicated bushing assembly.

3. Double-Acting Hinge Assembly (Part no. 0461-2205)

Freeman’s genuine marine hinge assembly is a double-jointed mechanical linkage cast in corrosion-resistant marine aluminum with 316 stainless steel pivot pins (supersedes legacy Part no. 0461-2072). The hinge linkage lifts the cover vertically out of the coaming channel before allowing it to pivot open past 180 degrees. The open cover rests completely flat against the deck plating, eliminating the risk of gusting winds or heavy seas slamming the heavy cover shut.

4. Cam Buttons and Low-Friction Hardware

• Nylon Cam Buttons (Part no. 0621-2004): Replaceable sacrificial friction pads manufactured from self-lubricating polymer fitted to the cam tracks. The button absorbs clamping pressure from the dog arms during rotation. Renewing worn cam buttons restores crisp, low-effort quarter-turn actuation.
