The oval geometry of Freeman cast deck closures delivers outstanding transit ergonomics, providing ample shoulder clearance along the longitudinal axis while minimizing deck cutout width. Maintaining the mechanical linkages and elastomeric seals to factory tolerances is essential to ensure uniform compression around the curved perimeter.

1. Gasket Guide for Oval Hatches: Compression vs. Knife-Edge

  • Compression Sealing (Models 1218 & 1524): The coaming features a raised solid spigot without an outer collection trough. The gasket is a continuous molded solid neoprene/EPDM ring (Part no. 9801-2003 for 1218 and Part no. 9801-2005 for 1524). Requires zero drainage plumbing, allowing decks to be washed down rapidly without debris retention.
  • Knife-Edge Sealing (Models 1524K & 1926K): The coaming incorporates a machined knife-edge rim flanked by a deep perimeter drainage gutter. The gasket is a hollow D-profile marine neoprene elastomer (Part no. 9835-2008 for 1524K and Part no. 9813-2001 / 9885-2012 for 1926K). Delivers immense concentrated contact pressure to withstand heavy green-water surges on exposed working decks.

⚠️ Important Service Notice for Older Model 1524 Hatches (Vintage / Built Prior to ~1993):

Modern Freeman Model 1524 hatches utilize four identical dog arms measuring 9.50 inches in standard length (241 mm, Part no. 0211-2004). On early generations of the 1524 hatch (manufactured prior to approx. 1993), the mechanical linkage was asymmetrical, utilizing two short arms measuring 7.25 inches (184 mm, Part no. 0211-2003) and two long arms measuring 11.625 inches (295 mm, Part no. 0211-2012).

Always measure existing dog arms prior to ordering if servicing an older 1524 hatch! The vintage arm lengths correspond to standard arms for Model 15 and Model 24 round hatches in our catalog and are readily available from our warehouse.

2. 4-Arm Kinematics and Cam Hub Operation

All three oval models operate via Freeman's central 4-hole marine aluminum cam hub (Part no. 0011-2002). Because the hatch is oval, the dogging linkages are angled to distribute uniform perimeter compression across both long sides and rounded end arches. Inspect nylon cam buttons (Part no. 0621-2004) during servicing and lubricate hub tracks with high-adhesion waterproof marine grease (e.g., Vickers Biogrease EP2) to ensure smooth quarter-turn actuation.

3. Universal Center Bushing Overhaul Kit (15"+ Architecture)

Models 1218, 1524, and 1926 all utilize Freeman's heavy-duty Universal Center Bushing Overhaul Kit (Part no. 0031-2204).
