Freeman round cast deck hatches utilize a central dogging mechanism that converts the rotational torque from the operating handle into radial dog arm movement via a precision cam hub. Understanding the mechanical variations between model sizes is critical for specifying correct replacement parts onboard.

1. Cam Hub & Arm Kinematics: 3-Arm vs. 4-Arm Configurations

Models 8 & 12 (Compact 4-Arm Geometry): Models 8 and 12 utilize a compact marine aluminum cam hub (Part no. 0011-2004) driving four short dog arms (3.75" for Model 8 and 5.75" for Model 12). These models also require the smaller handle shaft and compact bushing kit (Part no. 0031-2214).
Models 15 & 18 (3-Arm Geometry): Uniquely, 15-inch and 18-inch round hatches utilize three dog arms spaced at 120-degree intervals. They are actuated by Freeman's 3-hole marine aluminum cam hub (Part no. 0011-2001). Model 15 requires 7.25" arms, while Model 18 utilizes 8.75" arms.
Models 20, 22 & 24 (Standard 4-Arm Geometry): These full-sized access and escape hatches operate via the standard 4-hole cam hub (Part no. 0011-2002) driving extended dog arms (9.50" for Model 20, 10.75" for Model 22, and 11.625" for Model 24).
Model 30 (Reinforced 316 Stainless Steel): Due to the large clear opening and high closing leverage required, the mechanism on Model 30 is manufactured entirely from marine-grade 316 stainless steel with 15.00-inch dog arms (Part no. 0212-2012) and a stainless 4-hole cam hub (Part no. 0212-2015).

2. Round Hatch Gaskets: Compression vs. Knife-Edge Seals

Compression Gaskets (9801 Series): Continuous molded seamless solid neoprene/EPDM elastomer rings designed for smooth, raised spigot coamings. The same gasket fits lift-out covers and hinged models (-H suffix) regardless of aluminum or steel deck ring metallurgy.
Knife-Edge Gaskets (9810, 9812, 9813 & 9835 Series): Hollow D-profile neoprene gaskets engineered to seal against the coaming's machined knife-edge rim. Because channel dimensions differ between coamings, ensure you select the appropriate gasket for Aluminum Rings vs. Steel Rings, as well as lift-out vs. hinged cover configurations.

3. Center Bushing & O-Ring Replacement

If moisture seeps around the center handle spindle or if turning resistance becomes excessive, the internal shaft O-rings and sleeve bushing require renewal. We advise replacing the entire overhaul kit during servicing:

Models 8 & 12: Require the compact bushing kit with Part no. 0031-2214.
Models 15, 18, 20, 22, 24 & 30: Utilize Freeman's universal center bushing kit Part no. 0031-2204 (compatible with all Freeman hatches 15 inches and larger).
