Becker Rudder options

A modern rudder is the result of a carefully balanced combination of hydrodynamics, design engineering, and practical operational experience. The rudder’s basic design is crucial to the vessel’s maneuverability, but in many cases can be further optimized to meet specific requirements for energy efficiency, operational reliability, and service life. Becker Marine Systems therefore offers a number of well-proven design solutions that make it possible to tailor each rudder to the ship’s application and operational profile. Depending on the vessel type and operational conditions, these options can improve water flow around the rudder, reduce cavitation and vibrations, minimize mechanical stresses, and protect moving components in demanding operating environments.

These options are not standalone products but rather integrated design solutions developed to work in conjunction with Becker’s various rudder types. They are used on everything from tugboats and workboats to container ships, tankers, passenger ships, and offshore vessels where high demands are placed on maneuverability, operational reliability, and long-term operational efficiency. Since every vessel has its own specific requirements, Becker’s rudder solutions are individually sized and customized for each project, with the goal of achieving the best possible balance between hydrodynamic performance, structural strength, and long service life.

Becker’s Rudder Options

Becker currently offers the following options:

  • Twisted Leading Edge – optimizes the rudder’s leading edge based on the propeller flow to reduce cavitation, improve inflow, and reduce hydrodynamic drag.
  • King Support – moves the bearing support closer to the rudder’s center of force, enabling larger rudders with lower loads and improved structural strength.
  • Closed Linkage – protects the linkage mechanism between the rudder and the flap from external impacts in demanding operating environments.
  • Heel Pintle – provides an additional bearing support at the lower edge of the rudder and increases stability, especially on smaller vessels.
  • Rudder Bulb – improves water flow behind the propeller by reducing hub vortices and increasing the propeller’s hydrodynamic efficiency.

What all these options have in common is that they are based on Becker Marine Systems’ extensive experience in hydrodynamics, rudder design, and practical vessel operation. The goal is not to add more components, but to optimize rudder performance based on each vessel’s technical and operational requirements. The result is rudder solutions that combine high maneuverability, long service life, and good operational economy.
