Becker Daggerboard
The Becker Daggerboard is a retractable hydrodynamic fin designed for vessels equipped with Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), such as rotor sails, wing sails, kite sails, and suction sails. The fin’s function is to counteract the lateral force (leeway) that occurs when wind is used as a source of propulsion. By reducing leeway, course stability is improved while a greater portion of the wind energy can be converted into efficient propulsion.
The Becker Daggerboard is based on Becker Marine Systems’ extensive experience in hydrodynamics and rudder design. The daggerboard profile is optimized using advanced CFD simulations and is custom-designed for each vessel, providing high lift while keeping drag low. The result is improved course stability, reduced rudder effort, and lower energy consumption.
How does the Becker Daggerboard work?
Wind-assisted propulsion systems generate not only forward thrust but also significant lateral forces. If these forces are not compensated for, leeway occurs, which means the rudder must work continuously to keep the vessel on the desired course. This increases drag and reduces the energy savings that the wind system can provide. The Becker Daggerboard, on the other hand, generates the necessary lateral force below the waterline. This reduces the need for rudder deflection while allowing the vessel to maintain its course with greater precision. The improved hydrodynamic balance allows the wind’s propulsive force to be utilized more efficiently, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Two Solutions for Different Vessels
Becker Marine Systems offers two designs, selected based on vessel type, installation conditions, and operational requirements.
Liftable Daggerboard
The Liftable Daggerboard is equipped with a pivoting fin that is raised vertically into the hull when the system is not in use. The design offers great flexibility and is particularly suitable for vessels where the space below the waterline allows for vertical retraction.
Foldable Daggerboard
The Foldable Daggerboard is designed with a fin that folds horizontally into the hull. Its wide span provides highly effective lateral force compensation, while the system can also be integrated on vessels where a vertical solution is not practically feasible.
Both systems are hydraulically operated, PLC-controlled, and can be fully retracted into the hull during harbor maneuvers, navigation in shallow water, or when the wind-assisted propulsion system is not in use.
When is the Becker Daggerboard suitable?
The Becker Daggerboard is designed for vessels that use some form of Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) and wish to maximize the energy savings that wind power can provide.
The solution is suitable, among other things, for vessels equipped with:
- Rotor sails
- Wing sails
- Kite sails
- Suction sails
Each installation is individually designed based on the vessel’s hull shape, operational profile, and choice of wind-assisted propulsion system to achieve the best possible hydrodynamic performance.
