Energy Saving Devices from Becker Marine Systems

Becker Marine Systems offers market-leading solutions for vessels seeking to reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improve propulsion efficiency. Advanced hydrodynamics optimize the flow of water around the propeller, reducing energy losses and contributing to lower operating costs without compromising the vessel’s performance.

The product range includes the Becker Mewis Duct® and the Becker Twisted Fin®, two proven solutions developed for various vessel types and operating conditions. Both systems are custom-designed for each vessel and can be installed on newbuilds as well as retrofitted onto existing vessels. Independent model tests and CFD simulations show that these solutions can deliver significant energy savings—up to approximately 10% for tankers and bulk carriers and up to 4% for container ships, depending on hull shape and operating profile. In addition to lower fuel consumption, Becker’s energy-efficient solutions contribute to improved EEDI, EEXI, and CII ratings, making them a cost-effective way to meet current and future environmental requirements in the shipping industry. When the systems are combined with a Becker rudder, both maneuverability and propeller efficiency are optimized through a hydrodynamically tailored comprehensive solution.

Which solution is right for my vessel?

  • The Becker Mewis Duct® is designed for slower-moving vessels with fuller hull shapes, such as tankers, bulk carriers, gas carriers, and dry cargo ships. This solution optimizes the inflow to the propeller and can deliver significant fuel savings even under high propeller loads.
  • Becker Twisted Fin® is designed for faster ships with slimmer sterns, such as container ships, car carriers, ferries, and gas carriers. It optimizes the water flow in front of the propeller, reduces vortex formation and vibrations, and improves propeller efficiency at higher speeds.
