Digital monitoring is becoming an increasingly important part of modern ship operations. By continuously measuring and analyzing critical operational data, maintenance can be planned based on the actual condition of components rather than fixed service intervals. The result is greater operational reliability, fewer unplanned stoppages, and lower lifecycle costs. Becker Monitoring Systems encompasses Becker Marine Systems’ digital solutions for monitoring, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance of rudders and steering systems. Using advanced sensors and intelligent data analysis, the crew receives continuous information on rudder forces, bearing wear, and the system’s current status. The information can be displayed locally and integrated with the ship’s existing monitoring and navigation systems.
Becker currently offers two complementary monitoring systems that together provide a significantly better understanding of the rudder’s function and condition.
The Becker Intelligent Monitoring System (BIMS) measures the hydrodynamic forces acting on the rudder in real time. This information can be used to optimize maneuvering, reduce unnecessary rudder movements, and provide better support for both the autopilot and dynamic positioning (DP) systems. At the same time, the system contributes to increased safety by indicating when the rudder is approaching stall or operating outside its optimal range.
The Becker Bearing Monitoring System (BBMS), on the other hand, monitors wear in the rudder neck bearings through continuous measurements of bearing play. This makes it possible to schedule bearing replacements based on actual wear rather than estimates or recurring dive inspections, which simplifies maintenance planning and can reduce both downtime and service costs.
By combining continuous monitoring with predictive analysis, the shipping company gains a better basis for decision-making regarding both operations and maintenance. This leads to increased availability, more efficient service planning, and better control over the ship’s steering system throughout its entire service life.
