2400 Series Cast Hatch Routine Maintenance & Lubrication

Applicable to Freeman Marine 2400 Series Cast Deck Hatches
OEM Document Control
ISO 755-02-70
Revision: 06-FEB-2012
Core Principle: Proper installation and routine maintenance will ensure years of reliable service. This standard procedure establishes Freeman’s official lubrication points for drive spindles, internal O-ring seals, and mechanical linkage assemblies, preserving smooth dogging operation and 100% watertight integrity in severe sea environments.

Items Needed to Complete This Job

Shipboard Tools & Materials:
  • Clean shop towel / lint-free cloth
  • Small brush for precise grease application
  • Protective gloves (nitrile)
Approved Lubricants (Available from Bövik Marin):

Step-by-Step Maintenance Procedure

1

Operate integral T-Handle

Lift and operate the integral T-HANDLE to ensure the mechanism is cycling smoothly and functioning properly without mechanical binding.

2

Lubricate T-Handle shaft diameter

While in the pulled-up (raised) position, lightly lubricate the T-HANDLE shaft around its diameter near the lower end where it contacts the CENTER BUSHING using Vickers Oils BIOGREASE EP2.

3

Distribute grease to center bushing O-Ring

Lower the T-HANDLE and operate through a few full cycles. This rotational action distributes the shaft grease across the bushing’s internal O-RING, ensuring water exclusion along the drive spindle.

4

Wipe excess grease from grip

Wipe any excess grease off the upper end of the T-HANDLE shaft where the operator's hand may contact to maintain clean and slip-free deck operation.

5

Comprehensive mechanism & contact point lubrication

Apply a light, protective film of Vickers Oils BIOGREASE EP2 to the following critical components (lightly coat As Required):

  • Actuator pivot sockets: Ball pivots and linkage drive sockets.
  • Ramps: Wedge tracks including integral Acetron bumpers.
  • Handle U-Channel: Internal sliding guides of the mechanism channel.
  • Slotted end of dog arms: Contact surfaces underneath the nylon washer on each standoff.
  • Coaming flange: Contact lands where each dog arm clamps against the coaming under tension.

Scheduled Shipboard Maintenance Intervals

Every 6 Months (SOLAS Standard):

Visual inspection of dogs and seals. Complete lubrication of T-handle shaft, O-ring, and linkage points per steps 1–5. Verify coaming drain scuppers are clear.

Annual Drydock / Survey:

Strip old grease residues and salt scale using penetrating bio-fluid. Repack pivot points with fresh EP2 grease and conduct standard chalk testing to verify uniform gasket compression.
