BIOGEAR XP 68 is a biodegradable, high performance extreme pressure (EP) gear lubricant with excellent anti-wear and micropitting performance, based on fully saturated synthetic esters with a high degree of renewability. The lubricant is designed for sensitive environments where there is potential for oil leakage, for example from thrusters, some CPP designs and deck equipment. BIOGEAR XP is miscible with common mineral based gear oils and, unlike the HYDROX range, does not emulsify in water.
HYDROX BIO 100 and HYDROX BIO 150 are biodegradable sterntube lubricants based on synthetic esters, developed for use in sterntubes and bearings where water ingress may occur. The lubricants are emulsifiable, absorbing sea or fresh water that enters the sterntube to form a stable emulsion that continues to provide lubrication and corrosion protection even when water ingress occurs. Both lubricants are approved for CPP hubs and certain stabiliser bearings, and are type approved by Lloyds Register. HYDROX BIO 100 is viscosity grade ISO VG 100 and HYDROX BIO 150 is viscosity grade ISO VG 150, recommended by shipyards or Classification Societies where improved oil film thickness is required under severe conditions.
NEOX DT is a mineral oil-based emulsifiable soft grease approximating to a No. 2 grease, and can be used for the lubrication and protection of the CPP hub unit where mineral grease packing is required and where sea water, fresh water or condensation moisture may occur. The unique emulsifying property means it absorbs water to form a thick emulsion that continues to provide lubrication and corrosion protection, rather than being washed off. It adheres well to metal and does not harden or crack in cold, wet conditions.
What is a CPP, Controllable Pitch Propeller?
CPP is a propeller with adjustable blade angle that enables optimal efficiency and manoeuvring across a wide speed range without changing the rotational speed. The blade angle is controlled hydraulically via a system inside the propeller shaft and hub.
Why are environmentally acceptable lubricants needed in CPP systems?
CPP systems are located below the waterline and there is a risk of oil leakage to the marine environment. Under the US EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP), Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) must be used in all equipment below the waterline where oil leakage may occur. Vickers Oils CPP fluids are VGP compliant and biodegradable.
Which fluid should I choose for my CPP system?
The choice depends on the manufacturer specification and which part of the CPP system is to be lubricated. ECOSURE HSE is used for hydraulics and pitch control, BIOGEAR XP for the gearbox, HYDROX BIO for the sterntube and CPP hub, and NEOX DT for grease packing in the hub. The viscosity grade (ISO VG) is selected based on the manufacturer recommendation and operating temperature.
What is the difference between HYDROX BIO and BIOGEAR XP?
HYDROX BIO is an emulsifiable sterntube lubricant that absorbs water and forms an emulsion, while BIOGEAR XP is a gear lubricant that does not emulsify with water but separates it. HYDROX BIO is used in the sterntube and CPP hub, BIOGEAR XP in the gearbox.
