CPP Lubricants from Vickers Oils

CPP (Controllable Pitch Propeller) is a propeller with adjustable blade angle, enabling optimal efficiency and manoeuvring across a wide speed range. The propeller blade angle is controlled hydraulically via a system inside the propeller shaft and hub. Since these systems are located below the waterline, there is a risk of oil leakage to the marine environment, and therefore special environmental requirements apply to the lubricants.

Under the US EPA Vessel General Permit (VGP), Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) must be used in all equipment below the waterline where oil leakage may occur, including CPP systems. Vickers Oils offers a complete range of VGP compliant EAL products for CPP applications, based on fully saturated synthetic esters with superior oxidation stability and long fluid life. The range includes hydraulic fluids for pitch control, gear oil for CPP drive, sterntube lubricants compatible with CPP installations, and an emulsifiable grease for the CPP hub.

Hydraulic Fluids for CPP Systems

ECOSURE HSE is a range of Environmentally Acceptable Hydraulic Fluids (EALs) from Vickers Oils, based on fully saturated renewable synthetic esters with state-of-the-art ashless, zinc-free additives. The fluids are designed for critical applications below the waterline where there is potential for oil leakage to the marine environment, and have been strongly recommended by several OEMs for their superior performance in CPP systems. ECOSURE HSE is available in ISO VG 32, 46, 68 and 100, allowing the correct viscosity to be selected based on manufacturer specification and operating temperature.

ECOSURE HSE meets the requirements of ISO 15380 (category HEES) and exceeds the definition of an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) under the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP). The fluids demonstrate exceptional oxidation stability with up to 12,000 hours in the ASTM D-943 DRY TOST test and over 800 minutes in the ASTM D-2272 RPVOT test, resulting in longer service intervals, fewer fluid changes and lower total cost of ownership. The operating temperature range extends from -35 to over +100 °C.

Gear Oil for CPP Drive

BIOGEAR XP 68 is a biodegradable, high performance extreme pressure (EP) gear lubricant with excellent anti-wear and micropitting performance, based on fully saturated synthetic esters with a high degree of renewability. The lubricant is designed for sensitive environments where there is potential for oil leakage, for example from thrusters, some CPP designs and deck equipment. BIOGEAR XP is miscible with common mineral based gear oils and, unlike the HYDROX range, does not emulsify in water.

Sterntube Lubricants for CPP Installations

HYDROX BIO 100 and HYDROX BIO 150 are biodegradable sterntube lubricants based on synthetic esters, developed for use in sterntubes and bearings where water ingress may occur. The lubricants are emulsifiable, absorbing sea or fresh water that enters the sterntube to form a stable emulsion that continues to provide lubrication and corrosion protection even when water ingress occurs. Both lubricants are approved for CPP hubs and certain stabiliser bearings, and are type approved by Lloyds Register. HYDROX BIO 100 is viscosity grade ISO VG 100 and HYDROX BIO 150 is viscosity grade ISO VG 150, recommended by shipyards or Classification Societies where improved oil film thickness is required under severe conditions.

Grease for CPP Hubs

NEOX DT is a mineral oil-based emulsifiable soft grease approximating to a No. 2 grease, and can be used for the lubrication and protection of the CPP hub unit where mineral grease packing is required and where sea water, fresh water or condensation moisture may occur. The unique emulsifying property means it absorbs water to form a thick emulsion that continues to provide lubrication and corrosion protection, rather than being washed off. It adheres well to metal and does not harden or crack in cold, wet conditions.

Is ECOSURE HSE compatible with my seals?
